Most people use an average of 90 gallons of water each day. As you use your water it doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up quickly. Most people take running water for granted. We don’t realize how much we use throughout the day until we can’t use it anymore. Your water main line is the primary line that brings water into your home, usually from the city water supply. If you have an older home, this means you likely also have an older water main. If your water main is damaged and leaking, it’s important to get it repaired to save money and have optimal water pressure. Let’s take a look at 5 water main line problem signs to look out for.
Low Water Pressure
Low water pressure in a fixture can be a normal and easy fix. It usually means just that particular fixture has an issue, like calcium buildup from hard water. However if all of your fixtures have low water pressure this is likely an indicator that your water main line is the issue. It could be clogged, leaking, or have a massive buildup of calcium deposits if it’s old.
Slow Drains
Drains get clogged naturally over time and tend to drain slower. They catch hair and other debris. However, if multiple drains throughout your home are getting clogged regularly, then this might be a sign that you have a main line problem. If all of your drains are closed at the same time, this indicates that source of the clog is your water main line. Likewise, if you notice all of your pipes are slow at the same time, this could indicate a main line issue.
Discolored Water
If your water is not clear when it comes out of your fixtures this is definitely a sign of a main line issue. There should be no sediment with your water. If the water coming out of your fixtures is yellow, orange, red, or brown, this means you likely have a leak. The leak can let sediment in, and also heavy metals. You should not drink or bath in discolored water. If the water is only discolored from one of your fixtures then it’s probably an isolated issue.
Wet Soggy Yard
One of the most obvious signs you have a main line problem is a flooded yard. If you’re finding pools of water or soft spots in your yard and are not overwatering, you probably have a main line leak. If it’s gotten to the point that you’re noticing it on the surface of your yard, this likely means the leak is big and needs immediate attention. Call a plumber right away if this happens to you.
Increased Water Bill
If you notice your water bill getting higher each month, yet you’re not using more water than usual, then you may have a main line leak. Higher water costs without increased use almost always means you have a leak somewhere. If you’ve looked inside the house and aren’t finding anything, then the leak could be in the main line.
